Mars, through a deep commitment to sustainability, came to the ECOR team to seek help in making retail environments more sustainable. Ideally, they wanted to convert their cocoa bean shells into a circular display solutions.
Through an extensive collaboration study with Mars and other partners, the ECOR proprietary process converted cocoa seed waste into a performance material, the Mars ECOR Forged Fiber Alloy. The study concluded that the Forged Fiber Alloy was less expensive on a total cost of ownership than corrugate, ultimately using less water, energy, and land, while also reducing GHG emissions.
Mars UK launched an eco-friendly promotional display board dubbed "Bean Boards" with a fiber blend made from recycled paper and waste cocoa bean shells. A successful trial program was launched in Tesco supermarkets across the UK in the summer of 2021.
