EU’s Latest Formaldehyde Restrictions and Why ECOR Is Your New Solution

In 2023, the European Union issued its latest formaldehyde restrictions, set to take effect in August 2026. After examining formaldehyde and the critical effects of exposure, the EU established safe emission levels for furniture and wood-based articles.

What is formaldehyde, and why can it be dangerous with prolonged exposure?

Formaldehyde is a colorless, flammable gas found in many products today. It’s present in furniture, glues, building materials, and even occurs naturally in wood. You’re exposed to it simply by breathing air that contains formaldehyde off-gassing. This exposure can lead to irritation of the eyes, skin, nose, and throat. Formaldehyde is classified as “carcinogenic to humans,” as it has been linked to an increased risk of nasopharyngeal and sinonasal cancers.

The EU is leading efforts to reduce negative health effects by restricting the permitted levels of formaldehyde off-gassing in products. Starting August 2026, furniture and other wood-based products placed on the EU market may not emit more than 0.062 mg/m³ (approximately 0.05 ppm) of formaldehyde. This regulation aims to promote healthier indoor air and safer environments for everyone.

How does ECOR meet these requirements and even exceed expectations?

Unlike other boards on the market, our panels are made from recycled post-production paper and agricultural waste fibers. Our patented technology uses water, heat, and pressure to bind the natural lignins in the fibers, which hold our panels together. This eliminates the need for glues and resins, meaning our products contain no added formaldehyde. ECOR panels emit just 0.02 ppm of formaldehyde, well below the new limit of 0.05 ppm.

With the new restrictions approaching, brands and manufacturers need a sustainable solution that not only meets the requirements but also performs like traditional wood-based panels. That’s why ECOR is your new solution. Our panels are certified under the Indoor Advantage Gold standard by SCS Global and offer unlimited applications for furniture and cabinetry.
